Course Information
All secondary trainees receive 2 hours of subject training per week, led by a highly experienced subject leader, who has a strong track-record of outstanding results in schools in the GORSE Academies Trust. This ensures that training is highly tailored to delivery to pupils in KS3, 4 and 5, and covers all areas of subject knowledge and disciplinary skills. We offer great insights into how outstanding schools operate and what we do as teachers to continue to inspire and encourage pupils in a love of art and design. Our curriculum offer is highly extensive and unique in this regard.
Art trainees will enjoy a range of subject specific key skills and practical workshops throughout the three terms. This ensures that in any placement school you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to cover any discipline within the art curriculum. This strengthens your employability.
In Term 3, you will receive training in A Level Art and Design. This will allow you to continue to enhance your pedagogy and subject knowledge to fully adapt your “teaching to the top”. This will also prepare you for any key stage 5 teaching you may move into or be involved in during your training year.
You will have access to high-quality materials that will allow you to develop your own interests and create your own approach to teaching. By working alongside colleagues in our high-performing partnership schools, you will receive the very best opportunity to deepen your confidence and develop your own identity as an outstanding art teacher.

If you take the time to look around you and the world you occupy and the world you live in, you will see that as humans we have shaped it to our needs. We hold pencils, cooking utensils, tennis rackets and paintbrushes. The clothes we wear and the entertainment we seek all describe something about ourselves. Even the houses we live in, the vehicles we drive, everything we surround ourselves with relate to us and our human condition. Moreover, the core of all our surroundings and our belongings and our possessions have been through a sophisticated design process that has begun its journey with the creative mind of an individual. Art education gives us that creativity. It is the universal language that joins us to one another in a visual communication before we even opened our mouths.

As art teachers, it is our role to ensure we provide a high-quality education that includes an ambitious curriculum giving our students the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. Our training programme ensures that you are kept abreast of the most up to date pedagogies in art and design teaching. Weekly training sessions in art and design ensure that you will learn and refine your subject substantive knowledge and be able to plan and teach lessons to an outstanding level in a range of different settings. We will help you learn to adapt your planning to meet the needs of a range of learners and to ensure that they can enjoy and be inspired by your lessons. We also focus on developing your disciplinary knowledge, ensuring that you can articulate and communicate the concepts as well as the practicalities of art and design in the modern world.
