Course Information

Business Studies training will involve some post-16 teaching. All secondary trainees receive 2 hours of subject training per week, led by a highly experienced subject leader, examiner and someone who has demonstrated consistently outstanding results. This ensures that training is highly tailored to delivery to pupils in KS4 and 5, and covers the skills needed to teach across examination key stages. We offer great insights into how outstanding schools operate and what we do as teachers to continue to inspire and encourage pupils in a love of business and economics, and the high degree of relevance they have for employment in the business, technological and political spheres.

With both vocational and more traditional academic routes we will explore the pedagogical differences between the two and the strategies required for success in delivering both BTECs, GCSEs and A-Levels.

You will have access to high-quality materials but will be encouraged to be very independent in nature towards the development of your own resources for teaching. As business and economics professionals it is critical that you can operate as the only subject specialist in your school and your year with GORSE SCITT will develop the necessary skills to do this with confidence.

Meet the Business Subject Lead

Stephen Cheeseman

World economies have developed and globalisation has brought us all closer together than in Adam Smith’s time. Major economic events have punctuated history and defined eras since before the Industrial Revolution. Each of these events has impacted businesses and in turn, as customers, employers, employees, or entrepreneurs the impact is felt by individual citizens. Increasingly interconnected issues from all around the world influence the way we live our daily lives in the United Kingdom.

Young people who understand business and economics are placed to navigate the world that they step into. As business and economics professionals we bring the art of business and economics to life and contextualise individual circumstances to real situations. Our subjects are academic in understanding but practical in application. Students taught well will understand their place in the world but also wield influence. They will be able to critically review all situations and recognise that there is never a correct response as multiple stakeholders will benefit or be hindered by every decision that is made. We can use our subjects to create critical thinkers with strong moral direction having reviewed thoroughly the ethical challenges of our time. Students will either be employees, managers, or owners of businesses. We will give them the skills and vocabulary to understand that world and when we do our job well that transition into the next phase of their life is made smoother by the lessons we have taught them.

Through our GORSE SCITT training, we will examine the fundamental building blocks of our subject and use current developments to bring our subject knowledge and teaching to life. You will be able to plan and teach lessons to an outstanding level in a range of different settings. We will help you learn to adapt your planning to meet the needs of a range of learners and to ensure that they can enjoy and be inspired by your lessons as they recognise their relevance to their own everyday success. With a relentless focus throughout your training on the assessment expectations for the pupils, you will not only be able to give them inspirational teaching but outstanding academic success.

In this way, we can continue to ensure that our subject remains popular and relevant in every educational setting we teach in.

Applications are still being taken for September 2026
