Course Information

All secondary trainees receive 2 hours of subject training per week, led by a highly experienced subject leader, who has a strong track-record of outstanding results in schools in the GORSE Academies Trust. This ensures that training is highly tailored to delivery to pupils in KS3, 4 and 5, and covers all areas of subject knowledge and disciplinary skills.

During the first term you are introduced to the design process and how this is taught in schools through design, make and evaluate projects with clear links back to the National Curriculum. You will also begin to enhance your knowledge of the various specifications taught at key stage four to develop subject knowledge in the examination rubric. In the first term you will visit Leeds Arts University where you will be introduced to the post 16 options available to your students whilst supporting you in understanding creative careers in more detail.

During term’s two and three you will have opportunities to strengthen your subject knowledge during the practical subject knowledge sessions that take place throughout the year. In the penultimate term you will also have the opportunity to complete a series of subject knowledge enhancement sessions that focus on your own personalised gaps in knowledge of both theory and practical teaching in design and technology. Throughout the course you will have access to high-quality materials that will allow you to develop your own interests and create your own approach to teaching. Enrichments are a key element of the course and throughout the year you will visit educational sites, workshops and galleries.

You will be exposed to the diverse range of specialisms offered in design and technology whilst working alongside colleagues in high performing partnership schools who will support you in becoming an outstanding design and technology teacher.
