What is your current role and experience in teaching?

I am currently the Curriculum Leader of Design and Technology at The Farnley Academy and Subject Lead for Design and Technology (maternity cover) at GORSE SCITT.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

My passion for design and technology stems from the opportunities it provides for both teachers and students. I love the chance to be creative and innovative, it allows me to express my ideas and bring my thoughts to life. I love problem solving and both design and technology involve solving problems of varying difficulties and finding efficient and effective solutions. I find it really rewarding watching those I teach realise how the world around them works and how much they can change it.

What impact does strong subject knowledge have?

Ensuring you have a strong subject knowledge in design and technology can have a range of impacts on your career and the students you teach. It ensures enhanced creativity and problem solving; you will be better equipped to deliver a broad range of creative and imaginative design projects that solve real world problems, and it will give you cross-disciplinary skills.

Modules

Module one (Week one)

Nutrition

Over week one we will explore and develop an understanding of how the principles of nutrition and health are taught through the key stage 3 and key stage 4 curriculum.

Module two (Week two)

Cooking skills

Within this week you will explore the skills that will allow you to cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that you can train students to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet. You will become competent in a range of cooking techniques and develop an understanding of how to effectively model and teach them.

Module three (Week three)

Factors affecting food choices

Over this week you will explore how the principles of nutrition and health, specifically to consider those who follow special diets, are covered in the key stage 3 and key stage 4 curriculum.

Module four (Week four)

Factors affecting food choices

Over this final week you will explore and develop your understanding of how through the key stage 3 and key stage 4 curriculum factors affecting food choice such as lifestyle, the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients impact diet and food choices.

Delivery and Assessment

The programme is delivered through optional online tutorials and asynchronous study.

Assessments will include mini tasks, evaluative tasks, research and readings. There will also be an opportunity to reflect on the key ideas learnt in each unit of work. Each submission of assessment will receive detailed and clear feedback outlining professional knowledge, strength and areas to develop further over the remainder of the course.
