What is your current role and experience in teaching?

I am currently Faculty Director for the Arts at Elliott Hudson College. I have worked for the Gorse Academies Trust for 23 years in various roles including teacher of art, graphics, photography, product design and food and nutrition, the Arts and D&T Subject Lead and then as an Advanced Skills Teacher for the Trust.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

I enjoy creative subjects where students can be expressive alongside building core life skills such as problem solving.

What impact does strong subject knowledge have?

A strong subject knowledge in design and technology allows you to confidently deliver a range of key topics and skills to students in an accessible way with varying degrees of challenge.

Modules

Module one (Week one)

KS3 – Pop-up card

Design and make using paper and card and exploring different pop-up mechanisms.

Module two (Week two)

KS3 – Vibrobug

Design and make a prototype for the Vibrobug with electronic circuit and various components.

Module three (Week three)

KS4 – Docking station with amplifier

Design and make a prototype for a docking station inspired by biomimicry.

Module four (Week four)

KS5 – Lighting

Design and make a protype for a lightweight, low cost, sustainable light using CAD and modelling techniques.

Delivery and Assessment

The programme is delivered through optional online tutorials and asynchronous study.

Assessments will include mini tasks, evaluative tasks, research and readings. There will also be an opportunity to reflect on the key ideas learnt in each unit of work. Each submission of assessment will receive detailed and clear feedback outlining professional knowledge, strength and areas to develop further over the remainder of the course.
