What is your current role and experience in teaching?

Currently, I am Assistant Lead for English at The Morley Academy and SKE Lead at GORSE SCITT. I have been a teacher for 20 years.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

I have always been an avid reader and my passion for English Literature stems from this love. We live in a world made up of stories and studying these stories is the way in which I navigate the world around me.

What impact does strong subject knowledge have?

Strong subject knowledge first and foremost leads to confident delivery within a classroom setting. There are so many moving parts in a classroom, subject knowledge is one of the parts the teacher has control over which lends an assurance in the classroom that communicates itself to students. This engenders trust and I believe this is a fundamental part of the relationship that is built in the classroom.

Modules

Option One – Four Week Course

  • Key stage three English programme of study.
  • Introduction to the GCSE courses.
  • GCSE Set Texts – Shakespeare and 19th century novel.
  • GCSE specifications and assessments objectives.

Option Two – Eight Week Course

  • An introduction to phonics.
  • Teaching Shakespeare.
  • Reading.
  • Young adult fiction.
  • Preparing to teach poetry.
  • Speaking and listening.
  • Understanding the GCSE English Language.
  • The 19th century novel.

Option Three – Twelve Week Course

The twelve week course includes all material covered in option two, the eight week course, as well as the content detailed below.

  • Fiction or drama from the British Isles from 1914 onwards.
  • Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet/Macbeth.
  • Creative writing.
  • Media studies, A Level Language and A Level Literature.

Delivery and Assessment

The programme is delivered through optional online tutorials and asynchronous study.

Assessments will include mini tasks, evaluative tasks, research and readings. There will also be an opportunity to reflect on the key ideas learnt in each unit of work. Each submission of assessment will receive detailed and clear feedback outlining professional knowledge, strength and areas to develop further over the remainder of the course.
