What is your current role and experience in teaching?

With over 15 years of experience teaching Mandarin in both the UK and China, I bring a deep understanding of language learning across all key stages and across a range of educational settings, including bilingual and international schools. Currently, I teach Mandarin within the GORSE Academies Trust, where I support learners at various levels and contribute to the ongoing development of curriculum and teaching strategies. My approach is shaped by years of classroom practice, collaborative planning, and a strong commitment to high-quality language education.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

Mandarin is more than just a subject; it’s a living language that opens doors to a rich and fascinating culture. What excites me most is helping students connect with both the structure of the language and the traditions that shape how it’s used. I believe that language learning should be engaging, meaningful, and rooted in real-world context. Whether it’s through celebrating Chinese festivals or unlocking the logic behind Chinese characters, I aim to make learning Mandarin enjoyable and empowering.

What impact does strong subject knowledge have?

Having a solid understanding of the subject is essential for effective teaching. It builds confidence, helps explain concepts clearly, and enables teachers to support students more precisely. Mandarin requires deep subject knowledge due to its unique character system, tonal pronunciation, and cultural context.
