What is your current role and experience in teaching?

Currently, I am a Lead Practitioner in Modern Foreign Languages at The Morley Academy and a subject specialist for French and Spanish.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

I like to be able to communicate with lots of different people and having this ability has meant I could travel all over Europe.

What impact does strong subject knowledge have? 

Strong subject knowledge allows you to impart not only the information, but also the fun, including the etymology of words and how this has impacted our society. Without my SKE, I would not have gone on to complete my NQT teaching French and Spanish, working as a Lead Teacher of Spanish, Head of MFL at a school in Bridlington and now a Lead Practitioner. I can say taking part in an SKE course will open a whole host of opportunities that will see your career flourish! It did wonders for my career!

Module One – 8 Weeks

  • Classroom language and behaviours.
  • Theme one: Identity and relationships
  • Theme two: Free time and healthy living.
  • Theme three: Travel, tourism and the environment.
  • Theme one: School and work.
  • Theme two: Celebrity culture.
  • The GCSE specification for Spanish.
  • Theme three: Media and technology: GCSE style speaking exam.

Module Two – 12 Weeks

  • Theme two: Festivals and customs.
  • Planning for GCSE: Interactive vocabulary list.
  • An introduction to A-level. 
  • A-level style exam.

Module Three – 16 Weeks

  • The present tense.
  • The past tenses: Perfect and imperfect. 
  • The future tenses: Near, simple and conditional.
  • Time frame vs tense.

Module Four – 20 Weeks

  • Theme one greater depth.
  • Theme two greater depth.
  • Theme three greater depth.
  • Assessment design.

Delivery and Assessment

The DfE funded course is delivered through online tutorials and asynchronous study. The self-funded programme is delivered through optional online tutorials and asynchronous study.

Assessments will include mini tasks, evaluative tasks, research and readings. There will also be an opportunity to reflect on the key ideas learnt in each unit of work. Each submission of assessment will receive detailed and clear feedback outlining professional knowledge, strength and areas to develop further over the remainder of the course.
