SKE Lead

Rebecca Parker

As a teacher of Modern Foreign Languages, I have a passion for enabling students to build confidence in communication, as well as developing cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking countries. I am privileged to be the SKE lead for Spanish, supporting MFL teachers to become expert practitioners within the MFL classroom.

I began my teaching career in 2015 in Barnsley and was very proud support the faculty in achieving the best MFL results for the school in 2018. In January 2019, I began my role working as MFL Hub Lead within the Dixons Academies Trust in Bradford. It was here that my true passion for developing pedagogy in MFL began. I supported the NCELP Hub project, one of just 9 schools in the country chosen, to pioneer a reform of teaching and learning in MFL. This project was DFE funded, and gave me amazing opportunities to work with expert colleagues at The University of York in the three key areas of Phonics, Vocabulary and Grammar.

Since commencing my role at The Morley Academy as Assistant Leader of MFL, I have become a GORSE SCITT mentor; an aspect of my job I adore, as I am able to coach and develop the next generation of MFL teachers. At The Morley Academy, the MFL department is historically successful, with student outcomes significantly above national average in 2022. Should you take an SKE in Spanish with me, you will be fully supported throughout your entire training journey. Sessions will focus on the three areas of phonics, vocabulary and grammar, and I will endeavour to build in time to practice speaking during tutorials, which of course is essential within the MFL classroom.

Programme Structure

The SKE for Spanish consists of a core 8-week module which covers elements of key stages three, four and five consisting of the following units (200 hours, 8-week SKE):

Unit 1: Me presento

Unit 2: Las relaciones

Unit 3: El tiempo libre

Unit 4: El colegio

Unit 5: Mi barrio

Unit 6: El turismo

Unit 7: Nuestro mundo

Unit 8: El trabajo

Delivery and Assessment

Most of the learning is completed independently; you will be guided to access high quality resources by your subject lead. Subject leads are experts in their field and have an up to date working knowledge of both the National Curriculum and the exam rubric for GCSE and A-level examinations.

Following each assessment, you will receive high quality feedback identifying your areas of strength and the next steps that you can take to improve.

The course is designed to enable you to work at your own pace, and weekly assessments allow you to demonstrate your progress across the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. Tutorials will have dedicated time to practice speaking in a friendly, supportive environment.

Fortnightly assessments will cover a range of skills with tasks that reflect the demands of the GCSE. At the end of the 8-week course, a longer, more robust assessment will be undertaken, which will include a speaking exam with your subject lead.

“ I really valued the regular feedback allowing me to know where I could improve and where I was already strong, this helped me develop as a teacher. ”
